IPASummit 2017 Triples in Size, Expanding Industry Reach on Capitol Hill and Strengthening Broker-Dealer Due Diligence Programs

Last week, the Investment Program Association (IPA) held its 2017 IPASummit in Washington, D.C., where over 240 thought leaders from across our industry gathered for a series of informative discussions about the state of the industry. This year, IPA members held 236 individual meetings with members of Congress, spanning 30 states, to discuss legislation that would provide BDC Modernization, Accredited Investor Modernization and changes to section 12(g), preserving the 1031 Like Kind Exchange in upcoming tax reform and the impacts to investors and our members from the Department of Labor’s Fiduciary Rule. Wide ranging regulatory meetings were also held with the SEC, FINRA and NASAA.
For over 33 years, IPA members have been the leading industry advocate and it was never more evident than last week.  Your consistent, proactive engagement on behalf of our industry has and will continue to make a difference and the IPA is committed to lead through its active policy advocacy initiatives.
The 2017 IPASummit Special Report explores the key opportunities and challenges facing the industry, outlines the steps we are actively pursuing, recaps the keynote speaker addresses and summarizes discussions with industry leaders, key legislators and the regulatory agencies who make advocacy a priority.

Meetings with Congress

Attendance at this year’s Summit, and participation in meetings on the Hill, nearly tripled in size, which was reflected on social media throughout the week as IPA received digital engagement from key legislators, such as Senator Heidi Heitkamp, and tweets from the @IPAdirectinvest account were viewed over 7,200 times.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Throughout the Summit, the Labor Department’s Fiduciary Rule was a major topic of discussion, in addition to spirited conversation surrounding the forthcoming tax reform from the Trump administration. IPA, its members and guest speakers all echoed the need for the Department of Labor and the newly appointed Secretary of Labor, Alexander Acosta, to fully delay the rule until it is revised to account for American investors’ best interests. Discussions also covered a range of other topics crucial to the industry, including remarks delivered from Vice President Mike Pence’s Chief Economist surrounding what to expect from the administration’s tax reform and economic improvement plans.

DUE DILIGENCE SYMPOSIUM

An event designed by Broker-Dealers, for Broker-Dealers.

While Congressional meetings and keynote speakers were certainly the highlights of the Summit, IPA members and attendees also participated in Due Diligence meetings – where 69 broker-dealers/RIAs representing over 55 firms, heard updates from 18 investment sponsors. The Due Diligence portion of the event added significant value to the broker-dealer community, and the conference format will be expanded based on the strong response from attendees.
